Maiya graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in in Criminal Justice and received her J.D. from Northern Kentucky University Salmon P. Chase College of Law in May of 2024. She was awarded the Salmon P. Chase award, which is given to the graduating student whose law-related volunteer work best represents the spirit of advocacy of the prominent Civil War abolitionist Salmon P. Chase. In law school, she interned for the Kentucky Innocence Project and the Ohio Justice and Policy Center. She was awarded a fellowship from the Justice John Paul Stevens Foundation to spend a summer in New Orleans, Louisiana working for the Capital Appeals Project. She is also a board member of a local non-profit, Community & Restorative Justice – Covington.
